How to Sign Up for Training Courses
Welcome to West Side Soccer League's Referee Program. This page will help you sign up for our Referee training courses. Here is information about upcoming referee training.
Intermediate Referee Classes
WSSL will be hosting Intermediate referee training on the Upper East Side on Saturday January 26th, 2019. The course will be held at Trevor Day School, 312 East 95th Street, between 1st and 2nd Avenues.
The Intermediate Class should be taken by anyone who is going to be a referee or assistant referee at U12 or above in Spring 2019 or Fall 2019. The Intermediate Class is a great opportunity to:
- Increase your understanding of the Laws of the Game that you have already put to good use
- Learn some new things, like when to play advantage and how to better handle yellow and red card situations
- Review foul recognition in-depth
- Have a detailed discussion and review of the offside law
- Learn more about working as a 3-person referee team
- Meet and get to better know your fellow WSSL referees
- Have a free lunch!
This is an all-day course. Arrival time will be 8:45AM; the class will start promptly at 9AM. Lunch will be provided by the league. An Intermediate Referee Exam will be given at the end of the class. We hope to get attendees out by 5PM.
For those who prefer a class on a Sunday, Brooklyn region will be holding an Intermediate Referee course on Sunday, November 18th.
Date: Sunday, November 18th, 9:00am-6:00pm
Location: PS 32 Samuel Mills Sprole School, 317 Hoyt St, Brooklyn, NY 11231 (Union St at Hoyt Street)

Teen Referees
Young people aged 10 years and over, including Core and Travel soccer players and their siblings, and are very welcome to attend referee classes, and can gain community service credit for their time in class and refereeing on the field. The Teen Referee program welcomes new members and will make sure that you have fun as well as serving the league!
Volunteer registration for young people is a little different from that for parent volunteers. Go here for Teen Referee instructions.
More information about training can be found here.
How to Register for a Referee Class
These are the steps that need to be completed to register for a course. Some of them only need to be done once, if they're done properly. Please try to do these in order. It will cut down on problems and having to repeat any of these steps.
1) Volunteer as a referee by logging into you WSSL account and checking the box for Referee on your parent profile (if you have not done this already at registration) 2) Go to eayso.org and create an account and volunteer form if you have never done this before or log in and update your volunteer form if returning 3) Go to aysou.org and log in using the same credentials as you used for eayso.org 4) Click on "My Courses"in the top menus 5) At the bottom of the list, you should see "Instructor Led Courses". Click on the "Open" button to the right of this item. 6) Select "Referee Instructor Led Courses" by clicking on the Open button to the right of the item. You will see a list of all available in-person courses for that discipline. Choose 'U8 Official' or 'Regional Referee Course" as needed and click Sessions. It will unfortunately display every course in the country (believe us, we wish it didn't). 7) Scroll down and just look for the date we are offering the training (September 9 and 10) and then look for the WSSL course. All of our courses will say "West Side Soccer League" or "3/A/611" (which is our section, area and region) in the title. 8) Click on 'Register". To get the details for the class (time and place and requirements), click on the course name. The details will expand below the entry.Note that we use three different websites to manage our volunteer and training activities. Each of these sites serve a specific, important purpose in ensuring that our players and volunteers receive the best possible experience we can offer:
- wssl.org
- The West Side Soccer website. This is where we manage players, teams, and volunteers for our league.
- eayso.org
- The volunteer management website for AYSO, the parent organization for West Side Soccer.
- aysou.org
The online training website for AYSO (this is NEW and REPLACES aysotraining.org).
Register on wssl.org
First, register on wssl.org. Use an email address where you want to receive messages from us. Youth volunteers must use their own email address. For more information on Youth Volunteers and how to register, go here. Adult volunteers, start here. If you already have an account on wssl.org, skip this step.
Register on eAYSO
Next, using the same email address you used to register at wssl.org, register for an account at eAYSO. If there is a problem with the email address you used on either site, please contact the eAYSO Help Desk at support@eayso.org. The eAYSO website is used by AYSO to coordinate volunteer training and certification at all Regions across the country. When you register, you will be given an AYSO ID number. Please write this number down and keep it for reference. You will need it later in this process. If you already have an account on eAYSO, you don't need to register again.
Complete your AYSO Volunteer Form
Part of registering at eAYSO involves the completion of the AYSO Volunteer Form. The AYSO Safe Haven Department uses this form to manage background checks on volunteers to ensure the safety of all participants in West Side Soccer and AYSO activities. This form must be completed annually by all volunteers, including coaches, referees and board members. You will be asked for an electronic signature. This allows us to eliminate the use of paper forms and "wet" signatures, which saves considerable effort and time. If the instructions on the volunteer form ask you to print it, please ignore those instructions. If you don't supply the electronic signature, or if you don't complete all the required fields on the form, the form will be marked as incomplete, which will affect your registration.
